SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST

St. Andrew of Crete

VARIATION IN TODAY’S DIVINE LITURGY

At the entrance (Service Book page 97):

  1. TROPARION OF THE RESURRECTION – Tone 5:  Let all us believers give praise and worship to the Word, of one essence with the Father and with the Spirit and who is eternal.  Who was born of the Virgin for our salvation.  For He did willingly ascend in the flesh to be hung from the Cross and to suffer pain and death, and to lift up the dead by His glorious Resurrection.
  2. THE ENTRANCE HYMN:  O Come, let us worship and fall down before Christ.  O son of God, who art risen from the dead save us who sing unto thee:  Alleluia.
  3. 3.       REPEAT NO. 1 ABOVE.
  4. TROPARION OF ST. ANDREW – Tone 8:  Thou best shown thyself, O God-inspired Andrew, as a guide to the Orthodox Faith, a teacher of true worship and purity, O star of the universe and companion of the Bishops, O wise one, Through thy light thou best enlightened all, O harp of the Spirit.  Therefore, intercede with Christ God to save our souls.
  5. TROPARION OF ST. GEORGE – Tone 4:  As deliverer of captives and defender of the poor, healer of the infirm, champion of kings, victorious, Great Martyr George, intercede with Christ our God for our soul’s salvation.
  6. KONTAKION FOR THE THEOTOKOS – Tone 2:  O undisputed intercessor  of Christians, the mediatrix who is unrejected by the Creator, turn not away from the voice of our petitions, although we be sinners, come to us with aid in time who cry unto Thee in faith, for thou art good.  Hasten to us with intercessions, O Theotokos, who dost ever intercede for those who honor thee.

Prokeimenon:  You, O Lord, shall keep us and preserve us.

Save me, O Lord, for the godly man has failed.

EPISTLE:  The reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Romans.  (Chapter 12:6-14.)

BRETHREN, having gifts that differ according to the grace given us, let us use them:  if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; he who teaches, in his teaching; he who exhorts, in his exhortation; he who contributes, in liberality; he who gives aid, with zeal; he who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good; love one another with brotherly affection; outdo one another in showing honor.  Never flag in zeal, be aglow with the Spirit, serve the Lord.  Rejoice in your hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.  Contribute to the needs of the saints, practice hospitality.

Bless those who persecute you bless and do not curse them.

The Reading is from the Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew 9:1 - 8:

At that time, Jesus got into a boat, crossed over and came to his own city.  And behold, they brought to him a paralytic, lying on his bed; and when Jesus saw their faith he said to the paralytic, “Take heart, my son:  your sins are forgiven.”  And behold, some of the scribes said to themselves, “This man is blaspheming.”  But Jesus, knowing their thoughts, said, “Why do you think evil in your hearts?  For which is easier, to say, ‘Your sins are forgiven, ‘ or to say, ‘Rise and walk’?  But that you may know that the Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins”--he then said to the paralytic—“Rise, take up your bed and go home.”  And he rose and went home.  When the crowds saw it, they marveled, and they glorified God, who had given such authority to men.
