The Cross 

 

Carrying the cross 

Many people think that crucifixion with Christ or self-mortification simply means abstaining from evil and cutting off desires from the heart. This is the negative side that many people know, and they unfortunately think that this is the whole faith, which leads them to fall into despair and despair, feeling suppressed and deprived, and having their powers destroyed. In the end, they often say, openly or secretly, that they wish they could get rid of this religiosity and be freed from worship. This is normal because they did not recognize the positive, happy side, but were content with the negatives. 

As for the positive aspect, it is directing man’s capabilities, longings, and desires to work according to the spirit, with a mind enlightened by the knowledge of the loving God, or it is the release of man’s powers to live in the heavenly places while he is still on earth. 

It is the love of the crucified Lord and submission to Him through the work of His grace, so that we may live through Him, progressing from glory to glory, walking according to the new man given to us in baptism, as a new creation in Christ Jesus. 

Crucifixion with Jesus is not a destruction of powers, but rather a revival of them in the desire for life with the Lord and the enjoyment of eternity, and thus we have new ideas and new outlooks. 

 

The power of making the sign of the cross 

Jesus Christ gave us the cross, a powerful weapon that saves in fire, air, water, and earth, and nothing can block it. His power is irresistible, and demons flee from his image whenever he is depicted in it! The cross is the banner of Christ, and the angels love the banner of their king and run to wherever they see its drawing to help whoever draws it. 

 

The sign of the cross nullifies magic, corrupts all divination, and controls every corrupt pleasure. With it, man’s gaze rises from earth to heaven! 

The deception of the devils is invalidated by lacking the grace of the divine word, as when a person uses the sign of the cross, he corrupts their deceptions. 

In our Orthodox Church, in order to make the sign of the cross correctly, we must first join the first three fingers together on the right hand as an expression of belief in the unity of the Trinity, meaning that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are one God in three persons. We fold the last two fingers on the palm of the hand to indicate belief in the divine and human natures of the Son of God, meaning that Jesus is fully God and fully human. As for the palm of the hand, it symbolizes the womb of the Virgin Mary, where her son united the two natures together. 

 We raise our hand to the head until it touches the forehead, because it is the upper part of the human body, pointing upward, that is, to the sky, and we say in the name of “the Father,” because God the Father is the source of all creation and because He will enlighten our minds so that we can understand the teachings of spiritual life that we hear in the church. Then we descend with the right hand to the abdomen until it touches it as well, and we say “and the Son,” indicating by this descent to God’s descent from the heavens and His incarnation in Mary’s womb, and because His Son will fill our bowels and hearts with love for Him and for others. Then the hand touches the right shoulder, and we say, “And the Holy Spirit,” because Jesus, after his resurrection, ascension to heaven, and sitting at the right hand of the Father, sent us the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, who will strengthen us and give us the physical and spiritual strength to do the Father’s will and will. 

 Then we move to the left shoulder and say, “One God, Amen.” It is as if by this move from right to left, we are encircling the entire universe and confirming the mystery of the Trinitarian plan of salvation. 

We draw this sign many times during our prayers and divine services, when we enter the church and kiss the icon, before and after reading the Bible, before and after food, when we start the car, when we start studying or work, before and after getting up from sleep, and when we feel fear or joy. Or thank God... 

 

We must not make the sign of the cross hastily, but always with dignity, attention and deliberation, with a bow of the head as a sign of humility and reverence. Because the cross itself is all-reverent and because it is the invincible weapon with which we conquer all evil. It is a crown for every believer who worships well. It is the beacon of eternal light. He is, as stated in the Noble Law of the Cross, “the All-Praiseworthy Preserver of children.”

الصليب 

 

حول حمل الصليب 

 

كثيرون يظنون أن الصلب مع المسيح أو إماتة الذات تعني مجرد الامتناع عن الشر وبتر الشهوات من القلب. هذا هو الجانب السلبي الذي يعرفه الكثيرون ويظنون للأسف أن هذا هو كل الإيمان مما يدفع بهم إلي السقوط في اليأس والقنوط والشعور بالكبت والحرمان وتحطيم قواهم، وفي النهاية كثيرًا ما يرددون علانية أو خفية أنهم يتمنون لو أمكنهم أن يتخلصوا من هذا التدين ويتحرروا من العبادة. هذا طبيعي ﻷنهم لم يتعرّفوا على الجانب الإيجابي المفرح بل اكتفوا بالسلبيات.. 

أمّا الوجه الإيجابي فهو توجيه إمكانيات اﻹنسان واشتياقه ورغباته لتعمل حسب الروح، بذهن مستنير بمعرفة الله المحب، أو هو انطلاقة قوى الإنسان لتحيا في السماويات وهو بعد على الأرض. إنه عشق الرب المصلوب والخضوع له بعمل نعمته لنحيا به متقدمين من مجد إلى مجد، سالكين حسب الإنسان الجديد المعطى لنا في المعمودية بكوننا خلقه جديدة في المسيح يسوع. 

فالصلب مع يسوع ليس تحطيمًا للقوى بل انبعاثًا لها في شهوة الحياة مع الرب والتمتع بالأبدية، وبالتالي تكون لنا أفكار جديدة ونظرات جديدة. 

 

حول قوة رسم علامة الصليب 

 

اعطانا السيد المسيح الصليب سلاحًا نافذًا ينقذ في النار والهواء والماء والأرض ولا يحجبه شيء.. قوته لا تقاوَم، تهرب الشياطين من صورته متى رسم به عليها! والصليب لواء المسيح والملائكة يحبون لواء ملكهم ويجرون إلى حيث يرون رسمه ليعينوا من يرسمه.. 

علامة الصليب تبطل السحر وتفسد كل عرافة وتضبط كل لذة فاسدة.. وبه ترتفع أنظار الإنسان من الأرض إلى السماء! 

يبطل خداع الشياطين بافتقاد نعمة الكلمة الإلهية إذ عندما يستخدم الإنسان علامة الصليب يفسد أضاليلهم. 

في كنيستنا الأرثوذكسية، لكي نرسم إشارة الصليب بالشكل الصحيح، علينا أولاً أن نضمّ الأصابع الثلاثة الأولى معاً من اليد اليمنى تعبيراً عن الإيمان بوحدة الثالوث أي أنّ الله الآب، الله الابن، والله الروح القدس هم إله واحد في ثلاثة أقانيم. ونطوي الأصبعين الأخيرين على راحة اليد إشارةً إلى الإيمان بطبيعيتي ابن الله الإلهية والإنسانية أي أنّ يسوع هو إله تامّ وإنسان تامّ. أمّا راحة اليد فهي ترمز إلى رحم العذراء مريم حيث وحّد ابنها الطبيعتين معاً. 

نرفع يدنا إلى الرأس حتّى تلامس الجبهة، لأنّها الجزء الأعلى من جسم الإنسان، مشيرين إلى العلى أي إلى السماء، ونقول باسم “الآب”، لأنّ الله الآب هو مصدر كلّ الخليقة ولأنّه سينير عقولنا كي نفهم تعاليم الحياة الروحية التي نسمعها في الكنيسة. ثم ننزِل باليد اليمنى إلى البطن حتى تلامسه أيضاً ونقول “والابن” مشيرين بهذا النزول إلى تنازل الله من السماوات وتجسّده في بطن مريم ولأنّ ابنه سيملأ أحشاءنا وقلوبنا بالمحبة له وللآخرين. بعدها تلامس اليدُ الكتفَ الأيمن ونقول “والروح القدس” لأنّ يسوع بعد قيامته وصعوده إلى السماء وجلوسه عن يمين الآب أرسل لنا الروح القدس المعزّي الذي سوف يقوّينا ويعطينا القوّة الجسدية والروحية لنعمل مشيئة الآب وإرادته. ثمّ ننتقل إلى الكتف الأيسر فنقول “الإله الواحد آمين”. وكأننا بهذا الانتقال من اليمين إلى اليسار نلفّ الكون بأكمله ونؤكّد سرّ التدبير الخلاصي الثالوثي. 

نحن نرسم هذه الإشارة، مرّات كثيرة خلال صلواتنا والخدم الإلهية، عند دخولنا إلى الكنيسة وتقبيل الأيقونة، قبل وبعد قراءة الإنجيل، قبل الطعام وبعده، عند الانطلاق بالسيارة، عند المباشرة بالدرس أو بالعمل، قبل وبعد النهوض من النوم، وعندما نشعر بالخوف، أو بالفرح أو بالشكر لله… 

يجب ألاّ نرسَم إشارة الصليب باستعجال وإنّما دائماً بوقار وانتباهٍ وتروٍّ مع إحناءة للرأس دلالةً على التواضع والتوقير. لأنّ الصليب نفسه كليّ الوقار ولأنّه السلاح الذي لا يُغلَب الذي به ننتصر على كلّ شرّ. فهو تاجٌ لكلّ مؤمن حسن العبادة. إنّه المنارة للنور الأبدي. وهو كما جاء في قانون الصليب الكريم “حافظ الأطفال الكلي تسبيحه”.
