“To Know God…”
"If you want to know God's grace close your eyes, to know the value of light and sight," says the popular
proverb. Christianity says that if you want to know God's Grace, open your eyes and see that God
became a human being for our salvation. "Christ is Born; Glorify Him, Christ is come from heaven,
receive Him. Christ is on Earth, be exalted." (Ode one of the first canon of Saint Cosmas Matins prayer).
The prayers of our Orthodox Church at Christmas and every feast are filled with spiritual and dogmatic
teachings. It is useful for us to read and learn from them. The Church is preparing us to meet Christ.
The prayers of our Holy Orthodox Church prepare us to encounter the glory of our Lord Jesus
Christ in the feast of His Nativity.
We hear in these prayers that Christ, the eternal Word of God, was born of the Virgin Mary, and
deigned to dwell among us.
In hearing this, our first reaction should be to glorify Him, and offer Him our songs of praise. The
second, to receive Him into our lives.
We must be exalted from this world by means of repentance, to become more like Christ, as in
our current fallen state, it is very difficult to accept Christ as our King and our God. We must move toward
a state of repentance to be able to truly receive Him.
We have to move forward to meet Him. At Christmas, and at every feast, there is an action of
God and a reaction from us. Beholding man perishing, whom He created with his own hands; the creator
bowed the heavens and came down, becoming truly incarnate. He took on man's essence from the pure
Virgin, for He has been glorified.
This is what God did for us, His creation and His loved ones. He did not accept that we should
remain away from Him as exiles. He came to us to bring us back to Him, as the Fathers say: "God
became a man so that man can become a God (by Grace)." This is how God loved the world, He gave
his only Son for the world, this is the free act of love, by which we learn to love others as God loves us.
"Love each other as I loved you."
"Bethlehem has opened Eden; come, let us see. We have found the hidden delight; come, let us
lay hold of the things of paradise within the cave. There has the unwatered root appeared, sprouting forth
forgiveness. There is found the undug well, from which David of old yearned to drink. There has the
Virgin brought forth a babe, and straight-way made an end of the thirst of both Adam and David. For this
cause, let us hasten to it, where there is born a young child, who has existed before the ages as God”.
(Oikos)
"To the Son who was begotten of the Father before all ages without change, and in these last
days was without seed made flesh of the Virgin, to Christ let us cry aloud: thou who hast raised up our
horn, holy art thou, O Lord”. (Ode three).

Christ is Born! Really born... Let us be reborn from Him and receive salvation and eternal life
from Him.
